Disruption at the Gates: Unimaginable Opportunities in the Reshaping of our Industry

For years, high entry barriers and regulatory burden shielded financial services from disruption. However, the industry is finally succumbing to the transformative wave of digitalisation. Customer behaviour changes across generations, distrust in financial institutions rises, and expectations for seamless customer experience are high. The demand for services beyond the purview of incumbents is there and the world of finances has to deliver. New breeds of challengers are emerging with advanced technological capabilities and a refreshing approach to value creation. These companies are redefining financial services from scratch, asking: how can we deliver value to our customers? What problems do they have? And how can we combine our capabilities to help solve them? The future of finance will look radically different to what we have come to know today. However, it will create opportunities for incumbents, new entrants, and even players outside the industry to collaborate, co-create and build entire ecosystems of products and services.

Beyond Banking: Connecting the Dots

What do people do with their money when they are not simply keeping it safe? Pay those pesky bills? Definitely. Plan for that next trip to the Bahamas? You bet. Now imagine designing a way to help people live their best lives right where their money lives, and actually help them keep the change. This is the block we try to chip at every day in a bid to transcend traditional banking services and explore ways to unlock more value for our customers’ money where it matters the most. Let us take you through a bit of our path in breaking the mould. In our talk, we will show you:
- how we deliver exceptional experiences through interconnected services with purpose
- how we create a positive feedback loop for our users
- what we’ve learned along the way.

Human Centered Design Leadership

Designing with the user in mind or following human centered design principles is thankfully often the norm nowadays. But what about the other humans involved in the design process? What about the designers themselves? Let's talk about how human centered design should begin with the human doing the design work and how it can make design leaders become better humans themselves.

Reframing Finance by Design

The industry is demanding more and more design teams inside organisations. There is a tendency to see different levels of design maturity across teams. It's no secret that in-house designers tend to get challenges in the shape of requirements lists. Urgency is the most common reason blocking reframing activities. This pattern repeated, again and again, creates the "requirement-driven design cycle" which is hard to break through. For this session, I will share some tips and tricks that helped me to reframe challenges during my career. Lessons learned after trying to reframe challenges in different countries, organisations and teams. Lessons covering the most common blockers.

Designing for trust

Do your customers really trust you? Learn how Wise Business has prioritised designing for trust to retain users. Whilst trust develops over time, designers can play a key role in incrementally improving both individual and team relationships with products. As fintech companies continue to spearhead product development, we can play an even larger role in educating and guiding customers through the world of finance to empower customers to reduce their financial anxiety.

Design as a Key Enabler of Change

Design is a key tool in the strategy of organisations. When design is part of the core of an organisation, it can react and anticipate changes in society. It can sketch a vision and define the path to get there. And the way to do this is to design both inside and outside the organisation.

The Future of Design Tools

Most of our design tools are built for drawing mere, static images. But the products we design are living — they can be touched, swiped through and are truly interactive. For sure, you can build a click dummy from your screens but it’s still an add-on that connects those static images. And at least to us it feels like 2013.At Tomorrow, we started to radically re-think that paradigm and bring the actual experience in the center of our doing. That’s why we as designers developed our own little design tool that mirrors the entire app experience. Whatever we design — from an overdraft to sub-accounts: It lives there. You have to think about the context of your design. You have to think how you get to your feature. And what comes after. You have to think how it feels like to enter something in an input. And how it feels like if you encounter an error. And: because it’s based on components, it nudges you to work with your existing design system instead of re-inventing every component every day.We call it our "Prototype“. And within the last years, it evolved. It’s not only our central design artefact and single source of truth. But for sure, this way of designing also has some downsides: You have to make sure that it doesn’t limit your creativity – but we believe that by putting the experience first, you can go way beyond the status quo.

Bias now, Pay later – how to Overcome Bias in UX

Have you ever unconsciously focused on data that highlights your hypothesis? Or continued to push a project forward, even though you knew it wouldn’t succeed? Well, you’re not alone. Almost every design decision is fueled with bias, even when you’re conducting usability tests. But there’s light at the end of the tunnel: awareness is the first step into breaking bias and rewiring your way of looking at your designs. In this presentation, we’ll explore 3 different types of biases that we’ve experienced at Trade Republic, and explain to you how we’ve overcome and learned from them.

Design for everyone. How George deals with accessibility and inclusiveness

Every little thing we do in the interface has an impact and so does everything we don’t do. Inclusive design is about building the right thing. Accessibility is about building the thing right. Both help us to create products that serve as many people as possible. If users aren’t encouraged to use your design, they are likely to refrain from your product. Why? Because clients, especially potential clients, need intuitive yet sophisticated user interfaces. At George, we include accessible and inclusive design consciously to enable everyone to have financial freedom by including them in the digital world and to bring the product to the next level.
